■The raw material plant, yarrow, has long been known as an herb for healing wounds.
The scientific name, Achillea millefolium, comes from the Greek myth that Achilles used yarrow to treat the wounds of soldiers. The plant was also given the Latin name mille (1000) folium (leaf) because of the countless small sawtooth-shaped leaves that grow on the stem.
The Japanese name, Yarrow, also comes from the shape of the leaves.
By the way, the sweet mille-feuille is the French pronunciation of millefeuille. It was named after the shape of the baked pie dough, which looks like countless leaves.
