■Characteristics of the scent of citronella essential oil There are two types of citronella: the Java type, Cymbopogon winterianus, and the Ceylon type, Cymbopogon nardus.
Cymbopogon winterianus is said to have a better fragrance, and those from Java, Indonesia, are considered to be of the highest quality.
The main components of citronella's scent are geraniol, citronellol, and citronellal.
Geraniol and citronellol give off a fresh rose scent, while citronellal gives off a lemon scent.
Java-type citronella contains more than 70% of these three main components in a well-balanced way, giving it a gentle rose and citrus floral scent.Compared to Ceylon-type, Java-type has twice as much geraniol and citronellol, giving it a stronger, sweet rose-like floral scent.
On the other hand, the Ceylon type has less than half the three main components of the Java type, and contains Borneoal (a camphor-like scent that is softer and fuller than camphor) in the top note, which gives the fragrance an unpleasant, slightly grassy, ​​herbal impression.
